From staff writer George Joseph:
Many from Denton’s LGBTQ community were excited today by this morning’s two Supreme Court rulings, which struck down the federal government’s Defense of Marriage Act and invalidated California’s Prop 8 law.
“We’re really happy with the decision on DOMA and Prop 8. Regarding Denton, this reassures us that we are not only an important of this community, but also of this country,” said Kat Ralph, founder of Keep Denton Queer. “I think this is one step closer to complete equality. One battle won, but this is not yet over.”
Keep Denton Queer will be part of 90-minute rally planned in celebration of the rulings at 6 p.m. on the Denton County Courthouse lawn. Various LGBTQ and ally groups plan to deliver speeches, including Stonewall Democrats, Outreach Denton, Keep Denton Queer, and Parents, Families and Friends of Gays and Lesbians (PFLAG). Organizers of the rally encouraged participants to wear Human Rights Campaign or Keep Denton Queer t-shirts and to come prepared with signs and pride flags.
Ralph said their last rally, part of a national movement in anticipation of the ruling, attracted over 150 people. She expects a larger crowd tonight.
“This one is going to be huge!” she said.
