The rumors had been running around town for a while, but today I finally received an email announcing that Jean Schaake, an associate dean at the University of North Texas, is running for mayor of Denton. Schaake currently serves on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.
Schaake has not yet returned my call to confirm the announcement, but I also picked up the phone and dialed Chris Watts. He, too, has been the subject of rumors that he will run — though he wouldn’t confirm it when I profiled him at the end of his third term on the Denton City Council.
Well, today, he confirmed that he’s running for mayor, too (and that he hadn’t quite made up his mind at the time of our story).
I’ve called the Denton city secretary to see whether either has appointed a campaign treasurer (Schaake’s announcement came via Denton resident Joe Roy), but it’s still pretty early and things could change. The window of time for local candidates to file paperwork doesn’t open until a few months before the May election, so stay tuned.
When the current mayor, Mark Burroughs, finishes his third term in May, he will be ineligible to run again due to term limits in the city charter.
